How do I know what type of investors I am?
The SC classifies investors into three types, namely sophisticated investors, angel investors and retail investors. Each type has a certain investment limit based on certain income levels and assets.
- Sophisticated Investor - You qualify as a sophisticated investor if you (a) are an accredited investor, high-net worth entity (HNWE) or high-net worth individual (HNWI) as defined in the Guidelines on Categories of Sophisticated Investors issued by the SC, or (b) acquire any capital market product or Islamic capital market product offered or traded on a recognized market where the consideration is not less than RM250,000-00 or its equivalent in foreign currencies for each transaction, whether paid in cash or otherwise.
- Angel Investor - You qualify as an angel investor if you are an individual who (a) is a tax resident in Malaysia, and (b) has total net personal assets exceeding RM3 million or its equivalent in foreign currencies, or (c) has a gross total annual income of not less than RM180,000-00 or its equivalent in foreign currencies in the preceding 12 months, or (d) jointly with your spouse, has a gross total annual income exceeding RM250,000-oo or its equivalent in foreign currencies in the preceding 12 months.
- Retail Investor - You are classified as a retail investor if you do not meet the criteria for either an angel investor or a sophisticated investor.
